Are you tired of dealing with wasp’s buzzing around your home and garden, or even when your out backwoods camping? While commercial wasp repellents can be effective, they often contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to humans and the environment.
Fortunately, there are some homemade wasp repellents that can help you keep these pesky insects at bay, and within this article, I will explore some of the best home remedy wasp repellents that are suitable for your next outdoor gathering.
Essential oils as wasp repellents
Believe it or not, essential oils are gaining popularity as a natural remedy for repelling wasp’s. Not only do they smell great, but they can also be effective at keeping wasp’s away from your home and garden.
Some of the best essential oils for wasp control include peppermint oil, clove oil, and lemongrass oil.
To make a simple essential oil spray for wasp control, you’ll need:
- A spray bottle
- 1 cup of water
- 10-15 drops of your preferred essential oil
Here are the Instructions:
- Fill a spray bottle with 1 cup of water.
- Add 10-15 drops of your preferred essential oil.
- Shake the bottle well to mix the ingredients.
- Spray the solution around areas where wasp’s are likely to gather, such as doors, windows, outdoor seating areas, or picnic tables.
You will notice that in spraying the areas frequently, when you notice them, they will naturally deter, and there is no harmful chemicals involved.
Other natural wasp repellents
But what happens if you don’t have essential oils on hand? Don’t worry about it – there are plenty of other natural ingredients that can help repel wasp’s.
Here are some of the most effective:
1) Vinegar: Vinegar seems to have an answer in everything. From home cleaners to wasp repellent. That’s correct, the acid in the vinegar turns out, is a wasp’s nightmare. Mixing 1 part equal vinegar and water into a spray bottle, and spraying where they collect, can meant the difference between no wasp’s, and no more wasp’s.
2) Garlic: As good as this can be to repel vampires, the strong odor of garlic can also be a deterrent for wasp’s. To use garlic as a wasp repellent, crush a few cloves and place them in a small container. Add a few drops of water to release the scent, and place the container near areas where wasp’s are likely to gather. If there are any cloves left-over, add them to your favorite wild game meat BBQ dish with your favorite herbs from your Tower garden.
3) Cinnamon: It’s a little known fact that the strong scent of cinnamon can also be a natural home remedy wasp repellent. Simply sprinkle cinnamon powder around areas where wasp’s are likely to gather, such as doors and windows. Works great for cinnamon buns too.
Homemade wasp traps
In addition to using natural repellents, you can also make your own homemade wasp traps to help keep these insects, and others far, far away. We’re talking flies and mosquitoes as well.
Here’s what I’m talking about:
- Cut off the top of a two-liter soda bottle.
- Fill the bottom of the bottle with a sweetened liquid combination, such as jam, water and dish soap. Alternatives can be fruit juice or honey and water.
- Invert the top of the bottle and place it inside the bottom half, creating a funnel shape.
- Tape the two halves of the bottle together.
- Hang the trap near areas where wasp’s are likely to gather, such as outdoor seating areas, near a picnic or even at a campground.
Take stock of how many wasp’s you actually end up catching, it’s rather impressive.

Precautions and tips for using homemade wasp repellents
Now, while natural homemade wasp repellents can be effective, it’s important to use caution when dealing with wasp’s. The number one reason why, is because their sting can be rather painful!
It reminds me of a time I was cutting down some odd-ball trees on my uncle’s farm, when out of nowhere I got attacked and stung on my left eyebrow by a yellow-jacket. How it played out, was I threw the chainsaw out of my hands and immediately went for a cold compress.
Eventually the chainsaw ran out of fuel and 2 cold beverages later, the mission was to destroy what turned out to be a football sized wasp’s nest. Solution: Be nowhere’s near it. I let my uncle take care of it and I never felt so much pain until months later I got stung in the hand.
Anyways, side story over…
Here are some tips for safely and effectively using these remedies:
1) Wear protective clothing: When using homemade wasp repellents, it’s important to wear protective clothing to avoid getting stung. This could include long sleeves, pants, gloves, and a hat. (It’s touch to cover your eyebrows, so be prepared for anything) 😉
2) Keep a safe distance: When spraying repellents or setting up traps, it’s important to keep a safe distance from the wasp’s to avoid getting stung. (But if you didn’t see the nest to begin with, be prepared for anything) 🙂
3) Be aware of your surroundings: Wasps are attracted to food and sweet smells,(and apparently chainsaws) so it’s important to keep your outdoor seating and dining areas clean and free from food debris. Additionally, be cautious when using any sweetened liquids in homemade wasp traps, as they can also attract other beneficial insects like bees. And we need to save the bees to make that delicious organic honey!
4) Use caution with essential oils: While essential oils can be a natural and effective way to repel wasp’s, they can also be harmful if used incorrectly. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil or water before using them, and be sure to keep them away from children and pets.
5) Check and dispose of traps regularly: If you’re using homemade wasp traps, like from the steps enlisted in making them above, it’s important to check and dispose of them regularly to avoid attracting more wasp’s or other insects. Empty the trap and refill it with fresh liquid as needed. Also, if left for long periods, the smell does attract some unwanted visitors over time. (Skunks).

Earth is Heart!
I really appreciate this article on Home Remedy Wasp Repellent Jeremy, I am positive it will be helpful to many as the weather begins to warm up and most folks are figuring out way to get out and start their spring cleaning and other projects that have stacked up over the winter.
Man, peppermint oil must be like a miracle drug or something when it comes to these natural applications as I can already report that it does a terrific job of repelling and keeping mice away, especially mature mice.
I’m not too sure about other natural remedies like vinegar or cinnamon but am intrigued by the do it yourself traps you included the video on. Heading off to watch that now!
Thank you for your comment.
I’m glad to hear that you found it helpful and that you have had success with peppermint oil in repelling mice. Peppermint oil is a versatile essential oil that has many applications and is known for its ability to repel rodents and insects.
Regarding the other natural remedies mentioned in the article, vinegar and cinnamon can also be effective for repelling wasps and other pests. However, as with any natural remedy, it’s important to test it first in a small area to ensure that it doesn’t cause any damage or unwanted effects.
The DIY wasp traps in the video can also be an effective way to manage wasp populations around your home or garden. However, it’s important to remember that wasps play an important role in pollination and pest control, so it’s best to avoid killing them unnecessarily and to use repellents and traps as a last resort. Although some might argue this statement, I feel it’s still best to cope with mother nature regardless of the unwanted pests as best as we can, understandably is not always the case.
Thanks again for your comment, and I hope you find the video on DIY wasp traps helpful.
